The Agentic Internet: What We Build and What We Must Protect
Five Principles for the Next Era of Advertising
AI is becoming advertising’s new infrastructure. It is changing what we can create, how we make decisions, and how people discover and choose. The question for our industry is no longer whether we will use AI. It is what we will use it for, and what principles will guide us.
Advertising helps shape what we - people - see, believe, and choose. It helps us discover new things that make our lives better. And it helps power our economy. That gives our industry both an opportunity and a responsibility to help define this next era.
These five principles are Smartly’s starting point: what we believe we should build, what we must protect, and where we need to work together.
1. Expand human creativity.
AI should extend human imagination, craft, and judgment, not replace it.
AI can help us create, adapt, and respond at a scale we could not before. But the ability to make more does not tell us what is worth making. Marketers still bring the original thought, taste, experience, and judgment that make an idea distinctive. That is what our AI infrastructure should be built to amplify.
2. Protect consumer choice.
People should understand what influences a recommendation, see meaningful alternatives, and remain in control of the decision.
In the agentic internet, advertising will compete to be understood and recommended by the systems helping people discover, compare, and decide. The more automated that experience becomes, the more important human agency becomes. Relevance should help people make a choice, not quietly make it for them.
3. Earn trust.
Brand building is changing. The trust equation is not.
People have always wanted relevance without intrusion, personalization without losing privacy, and convenience without giving up control. AI raises the stakes as advertising becomes more conversational and personal. Whether a brand is reaching someone directly or being evaluated by an agent acting on their behalf, it still has to earn trust by being reliable, credible, and relevant.
4. Create a better value exchange.
Advertising should create value beyond capturing attention.
As advertising moves closer to decisions and action, we have an opportunity to make it more useful to the people who experience it. Help someone discover something they need. Give them information that makes a decision easier. Earn their attention by making the next step more relevant and valuable. Our ambition should be more valuable advertising, not simply more advertising.
5. Build the standards together.
No company should define this era alone. We need shared rules that enable innovation while protecting people and the ecosystem.
At the dawn of the internet, our industry came together to establish the definitions, practices, and standards that helped it scale. AI requires that same leadership and greater urgency. Marketers, agencies, platforms, technology companies, and trade associations all have a role in deciding what we build, what we protect, and how these systems operate.
These are the principles we believe should guide the agentic internet. Putting them into practice will take the whole industry. We hope you’ll challenge them and help make them better. No company should write this rulebook alone.
